LANCE DAVIDS: bio and profile

Discovered by former Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter in 2004 at the age of just 18, Lance Davids’ increased maturity in recent years has been rewarded with a return to the national team.

The well-travelled midfielder left South Africa at an early age to join German side 1860 Munich, where he made his Bundesliga debut in 2003.

He later made the switch from Germany to Sweden, signing for Djurgardens. During his time in the Swedish capital, Lance was voted best right back in the Swedish League in 2007 and 2008, thus attracting the attention of teams in larger European competitions, with Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle Utd inviting Davids on trial in 2007.

Looking to cement his place in the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup squad, the versatile South African returned to South African club football in January 2009, signing for reigning champions, Supersport United.

With a league winner’s medal secured with Supersport, Davids then signed for his hometown club Ajax Cape Town, where he enjoyed an outstanding spell of form in the 2009-2010 season, culminating in being selected by Carlos Alberto Parreira for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Davids’ returned to European football in July 2010, when he signed a three-year contract with newly promoted Belgian Premier League club, S.K. Lierse, establishing himself as a key player both at right back and central midfield.

Lance moved back to his hometown, singing for Ajax Cape Town in January 2013.
